Enregistré en 1953 avec Wendell Marshall à la basse, à l'ostinato régulier et parfait et Butch Ballard ou Dave Black à la batterie, à la régularité de métronome, l'essentiel du travail est fourni par un Duke Ellington constamment inspiré, se tenant sur le droit fil de ses propres compositions où l'on se surprend à ne pas être déçu de l'absence de sa grosse machine de cuivres, tant sa présence est efficace et pleine de clins d'oeil à son écriture. Duke Ellington joue et se joue de lui-même, tantôt traînant, tantôt volubile, il se fait modestement l'interprète d'un catalogue de standards, magnifiés par l'authenticité du jeu de leur créateur. Revue Nuclear War / Sun Ra Arkestra:Attention, Nuclear War est bien plus qu'une curiosité, c'est une pièce essentielle pour les fans et les autres ! Si l'on réédite çà et là beaucoup d'albums de Sun Ra des années 60 et 70, celui-ci possède déjà l'avantage d'être un véritable inédit qui, jamais sorti en LP, n'a rien d'un fond de tiroir. Il s'agit d'abord d'un album tardif du maître, datant des années 80 et qui devait être curieusement publié par un label new-wave britannique. Ensuite, Nuclear War a la particularité d'être funky en diable (on en connaissait déjà quelques exemples dont Lanquidity) pour ne pas dire rap. En effet, l'ensemble s'ouvre sur la chanson-titre, véritable hymne engagé contre le nucléaire, qui est prêché, scandé, sur un ton qui ne manquera pas d'évoquer les Last Poets ou l'Art Ensemble Of Chicago du groovy Les Stances à Sophie. Sur le reste du disque, c'est la fidèle chanteuse June Tyson qui se fait la porte-parole du puissant cocktail cosmico-magique du Sony'r Ra. -Philippe Robert.
