Revue Young, Gifted and Black / Aretha Franklin:Faisant suite à une période de remise en question qui faillit avoir raison de sa carrière en 1969, l'album Young, Gifted And Black (1971) suit de peu l'excellent Spirit In The Dark avec lequel il n'a aucun mal à rivaliser. Depuis qu'elle est apparue à la télévision avec quelques kilos en moins, tout semble de nouveau sourire à Aretha Franklin qui écrit d'autres chansons. Toutefois, l'essentiel du répertoire est ici composé de standards qui rendent hommage à Nina Simone, Otis Redding, les Beatles, Burt Bacharach ou Elton John dont elle reprend "Border Song". La tension du précédent album est encore palpable lorsqu'elle évoque son divorce sur "All The King's Horses". Si l'inspiration est profane, la ferveur, elle, est bel et bien celle du gospel, comme le souligne l'accompagnement inspiré de Billy Preston, Grady Tate et Cornell Dupree, comme les chœurs tenus par les Sweet Inspirations. À noter, la présence de Donny Hataway, ainsi qu'un titre très funky qui se placera dans les charts: "Rock Steady". Dans la foulée, la reine de la soul connaîtra la consécration avec un enregistrement public : Aretha Live At The Fillmore West. -Philippe Robert.
